Purpose:

This lesson introduces students to the concept of climate change and collaboratively investigate the evidence from prehistoric times to the present day. Students will learn about ice core and tree ring evidence, and look at graphs and charts showing human activity—primarily burning fossil fuels—has already begun to warm the planet. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to describe the greenhouse effect, explain how greenhouse gases emitted by humans trap additional heat and warm the atmosphere, identify the top three most potent greenhouse gases, and discuss the consequences a warmer atmosphere has on the Earth.
