Choosing the best governance and ownership structures for your community

Nowadays, there's few things we can do without needing energy. It's no longer considered a luxury service, but it's still not considered a public good, at least in the US (where we are), like education, public infrastructure, and fire protection. When working on the microgrid projects we are part of, an important part has been to define the ownership and governance structures.

What is ownership? Ownership refers to who has control over a good, building, organization, or more, as well as who reaps the benefits of it. Microgrid ownership can look many ways, depending on each communities challenges and opportunities.

What are the differences between governance an ownership?

We (Climable) have participated in a study in Governance options within current Massachusetts Law. This study was conducted in group with MAPC, City of Chelsea, GreenRoots. The models included in this report include: Public Benefit Corporation, X, Y,Z. You can read it here.
