Fenway Microgrid Overview

Climable and the Fenway Community Development Corporation (FCDC) have teamed up to strengthen energy resilience in the Fenway neighborhood and explore the possibility of a community microgrid in Fenway. A microgrid is a local, independent energy system that provides backup power during outages to the key buildings in a neighborhood. Keeping power on to these facilities can keep the community safer during emergencies, by providing critical resources to ensure everyone’s needs are met. To learn more about microgrids, check out this resource.

Project goals

Climable and Fenway CDC’s goals are to:

  • Enhance the community’s energy literacy

  • Empower the community to take ownership and control of their energy supply

  • Strengthen the neighborhood’s energy infrastructure, making it more dependable and resilient

  • Promote the adoption of clean energy sources and provide access to the related financial benefits

Why Fenway?

The Fenway neighborhood can benefit from a community microgrid because of the current issues it faces and its vulnerability to future impacts of climate change. In particular:

  • Worse air quality than 89% of neighborhoods in Massachusetts

  • Rising number of days spent above 96°F, more than in other parts of Boston

  • More than 2/3 of land is at extreme risk of flooding in the over the next 30 years

We want to hear from you!

At Climable, we understand that every community is different. We work to make sure each microgrid project reflects the unique needs, desires, and characteristics of the neighborhood we’re working with. But we can’t do that without the help of the community. We’re calling on any and all community members to share their thoughts about their concerns and experiences with energy in Fenway.

We want to know the answer to questions such as: Do you worry about the cost of energy? Where would you go in an emergency if your building lost power? And more!

To leave your feedback, fill out this brief survey (or use the button below). If you’re interested in learning more or joining the community advisory committee, please be sure to indicate that on the form. If you have any questions or want to reach us directly, give us a shout at microgrids@climable.org.

We look forward to hearing from you!
