Community Education Grant: Climate Justice Workshops

In Spring 2024, Climable, in tandem with Mass Save, launched a climate justice workshop series for residents of Chinatown and The Port Neighborhood in Cambridge. This project focuses on engaging residents of all ages in complex themes of energy and climate justice. Climable provided interactive activities to teach residents about clean energy and energy justice. The project provided residents with resources to help them contribute to a climate-resilient city and to learn about money-saving options through resources provided by Mass Save—the energy efficiency coalition for the state of Massachusetts. Climable also engaged residents in climate justice through guided activities to discuss the climate crisis in their communities and discuss real-world solutions. This workshop series connected to Climable’s ongoing engagement with residents in Chinatown and Cambridge on themes of energy justice, sustainability, and energy accessibility.

The project consists of multiple educational activities for all ages, including building a solar power bracelet to visualize how solar panels work, participating in Climable’s version of the climate ribbon activity to push youth to reflect on their involvement and impact in climate change, as well as distributing educational, money-saving resources in multiple languages provided by Mass Save.

The resulting Ribbon Tree from Climable’s version of the climate ribbon activity. Cambridge Youth reflected on what they were concerned about losing due to the impact of climate change, such as fresh air, and added their ribbon to the tree. This activity aims to build solidarity toward climate action by sharing fears and anxiety about what we stand to lose to climate change.

A Cambridge youth shows off her solar power bracelet amongst her collection (second to last from her wrist). The beads used to build the solar power bracelets change color in the sun, demonstrating the power of UV radiation. This activity supports illustrates the power of sunlight, making it a great way to begin engaging our youngest community members.

A resource Climable created and provided to adult workshop participants in Boston’s Chinatown. It includes an overview of the information covered in the workshops, important resources and definitions, and a summary of Climable’s work. Participants received this handout in conjunction with many other resources provided to Climable by Mass Save. Participants were also given contact information to follow up with Climable if needed.
