Humans have come up with a number of creative ways to create energy. One is CHP- combined heat and power. There is a great example of it IRL here in Cambridge, MA. The Veolia CoGeneration Plant produces electricity and uses waste heat for heating and cooling in buildings nearby.
The recycled waste heat is used for steam heating, heating water, or powering chillers. CHP uses less fuel than if produced separately and can achieve up to 80% efficiency- meaning its carbon footprint is a lot lower than traditional electricity generation.
